Do you need your own domain name in order to have a web site?
No. You can have a web site that is accesed as a sub-domain of the name used by your ISP or hosting provider. For example, if you were hosting at the Lorian Network, your site could be accessed by the address "yourcompany.lorian.net." However, most people prefer to get their own domain name. That way your site can be accessed by the address "www.yourcompany.com." |

How do I get my own domain name?
Once you have a name in mind, you can register it -- if that name has not already been used by someone else. If your chosen name has been used, you'll need to come up with an acceptable variation that is available. You must also choose the top level domain you wish to register under, com, net, org, etc. There are many companies that can register the name for you. See the links below or in the Resources section of the site. |
| How much does it cost to get my own domain name? |
The cost of registering a domain name varies with the service you use to do the registration. Currently, registration runs from about $10.00 to $35.00 per year, depending on the registration service. |
| How does the internet "know" where my web site is? |
When you register your domain name, you are required to provide the IP number (internet address) of the computers that will be "authoritative" for your new domain. If you will be hosting your site with the Lorian Network, you would enter the IP numbers of our Domain Name Servers which would then handle the requests for for your new domain. (see Support Section) |
