There are two basic questions to answer when beginning to design your web site
|
| Web Site Function |
Static Function |
Dynamic Function |
Application Server |
Question #1
What do you want your web site to do?
 |
The most basic web sites simply display information. You can think of them as electronic brochures, or as entries in a world-wide yellow pages. Though simple, they are valuable because they allow potential customers to find information about your company and its products or services.
|
The next level of web site type is often called "dynamic," because these sites "do" something. You might be able to search the site for information of interest, download files, sign-up for a mailing list, play a movie, or listen to music. This kind of web site usually also has a dynamic design. |
The most complex type of site is an application server. These sites are doing more work behind-the-scenes than they are up front, as a connection to a more complex system. Most ecommerce sites fall into this category. Some only allow access to authroized individuals, for example, managing the sales forces of a major corporation, or for customer access to confidential bank records. |

Question #2
What do you want your web site to look like? |
The most basic appearing web sites are composed of text only, or largely text with a few added graphics. Most of the early internet was composed of sites of this type. The HTML language was created to create this type of site design.
|
The middle ranges of sites are composed with graphics and page-layout in mind. As designers from the world of print media have taken to the web, site design has become much more sophisticated and pleasant to look at. The majority of sites today fall somewhere in this category. |
The most complex sites in terms of appearance rely almost exclusively on interactive graphics and animation and digital movies. They make extensive use of Flash Animations, movie files, sound and music. Look at some of the web sites designed for Hollywood movie promotion and you'll see these kind of sites. |
|
The design appearance of a web site has very little to do with what the site "does." You could have a very simple appearing text-based site that was a front-end for a complex system. You could have a very complex appearing, graphics-laden site that didn't actually "do" anything at all.
The more complex your site is to be, in either function or design, the longer it will take to build and the more expensive it will be. Plan accordingly.
