What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is used to transfer files across the internet from one computer to another. It ISN'T the web. It ISN'T email, it's something else that also uses the internet to communicate.

How do I use FTP?
To transfer files via FTP you need an FTP client program. There are many commercial, shareware and freeware FTP programs available for most computer operating systems. See our Resources section for links and downloads of FTP client programs.
FTP simply connects you to a space on the disk drive of another computer. The only thing that you'll see is a directory listing of the files (if any) in that directory space. Once connected you can upload files to the remote computer, download files from it, delete or rename files and create new subdirectories.
All these operations occur within your space on the web server. You cannot modify anyone else's files. |

Why do I need FTP?
If you are creating your web site yourself, you need FTP to transfer the web pages that you have made to the web server. If someone else is creating the web site for you, then THEY need FTP to upload your web pages. |
How do I put up my
Web Site by FTP?
Use an FTP client program to connect to "www.yourdomain.com" using your domain's Administrator name and password. That will connect you to the disk drive space allocated for your web site on the web server. |
